Cathy Donald

About My Work

Cathy Donald is director and co-founder of Ergo Law Limited, a specialist employment law firm based in the West End of Edinburgh. Originally from Dublin, Cathy studied law in Edinburgh and trained at McGrigors LLP (now Pinsent Masons). She has specialised in employment law since qualification, working in a full-service law firm (McGrigors LLP) advising large employers and also working in a smaller firm (ELP Arbuthnott McClanachan) advising SMEs and employees on all aspects of employment law.

In January 2016, Cathy and her colleague Emma Reid established Ergo Law Limited with the aim of providing high quality, expert employment advice. Cathy advises SMEs in a wide variety of industries throughout the employment relationship. Her experience is broad and includes drafting employment contracts and policies and ensuring good recruitment procedures, advising on investigations, disciplinary, grievance and capability processes, equal opportunities and discrimination, TUPE transfers, reorganisation and redundancy processes and settlement agreements.

In addition, Cathy is a skilled negotiator advocating on behalf of employees and senior executives in relation to exits, settlement agreements and other issues surrounding the termination of employment, including restrictive covenants. Cathy has experience of supporting employees through difficult processes whether in relation to disciplinary matters, capability or redundancy. She represents both employees and employers in the Employment Tribunal including unfair dismissal, discrimination and breach of contract/unlawful deductions from wages claims.

Cathy recently completed the Core Solutions flagship Mediation, Negotiation and Conflict Management Skills training and is available to act as a mediator with particular expertise in employment law disputes. Her deep understanding of all aspects of the employment relationship together with her ability to distil complex facts and arguments into digestible issues allow her to provide a creative and productive approach to resolution.
